09-3X Tamping Machine

Year of Production: 1999
Avantgarde’s Refurbishment: 2022

This project is one of the many successfully delivered by Avantgarde over the years. It stands out for the complexity of the tasks and the outstanding engineering and technological results achieved thanks to the expertise of our highly skilled technicians. All work was carried out in-house, across the various departments of Avantgarde’s railway workshop in Modugno (BA), Puglia – Italy.

Avantgarde completed a full refurbishment of the 1999 Plasser & Theurer 09-3X tamping machine, restoring it to exceptional operational condition and upgrading it to 2022 standards (after 23 years of service), in full compliance with international safety regulations.

The project included installation a fully overhauled Caterpillar engine with new exhaust and tropicalization system.

The frame was fully checked, roof replacement, rust removal, and new paint, New automatic coupler (AS 7524:2019) were installed, along with updated safety markings. Running gear was made compliant with Client’s destination local standards, with satellite tracking units installed on the bogies.

Hydraulic and pneumatic plants were fully tested and restored, with key components like pumps and valves replaced with new ones. The brake system was upgraded and tested for compliance with Client’s destination local standards.

Electrical and electronic systems were modernized with new lighting (AS 7531:2015), air conditioning, batteries, and compatibility with the T5 DATALOGGER. We integrated Avantgarde’s patented technologies to boost operational performance and safety: the AVrecorDATA ensures real-time vehicle monitoring and diagnostics, fully compliant with EN 62625 and EN 14033/1-2, and the wRails 2.0 that enables accurate input and tracking of theoretical track geometry parameters.

Following a successful Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), the machine was successfully delivered and commissioned to our Client.
